I adopted a puppy from here who they named gecko. He is the sweetest and funniest dog I have ever been around. The people working at the shelter were friendly and helpful. But it did seem like Hershey formerly known as gecko was dehydrated. And was extremely hungry when we got him home. I am delighted to have adopted him. And happy to say he has found his forever home. Love this puppy so much.

They have an awesome cat area here!! Staff is friendly and you are encouraged to come and play with the kitties. There is a kitten room that is so adorable and funny,  and in the main room you are allowed to take cats out of their cages and interact with them as well. Super fun day!

We took our sons puppy there because his roommate told him he had to find him a new home. Thinking he was being placed in a no KILL shelter I would have figured he would have eventually been put up for adoption but not even five days later they had put him down. Didn’t even give him a chance.

At Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter we strive to find the right home for all adoptable animals, however we do euthanize animals that are suffering quality of life issues or demonstrate behavior that may put the public at risk.

As a public funded shelter, we have to put the safety of our residents as a primary concern alongside that of animal welfare.  We do have a highly trained staff behaviorist that evaluates each and every animal that comes into the shelter so that their behavior can be assessed.

Trust me when I say this is one of the best and cleanest county shelters you can find around here. they helped me find my dog, formerly known as Cauliflower, who ended up being as sweet as can be and they were willing to bend over backwards to ensure she could find a home

I visited to adopt a dog, and they were very helpful and genuinely nice people who worked there.  They seem to spend as much time as possible with the dogs on an individual basis and the place was kept clean.  They also have a behavioral specialist who assists with meet and greet with your children and pets to make sure the  cat or dog you are interested in adopting is a good match. They do a very thorough check to make sure all potential adopters are responsible and have the ability to provide the pet with his or her needs. This is to make sure the pet has stability and a safe forever home and it's plain common sense.  There's a few who gave bad reviews because of this, but really, if you are responsible and have the proper home and means to care for a pet, you shouldn't have a problem with this. Be honest with yourself... If this process is a problem for you, there's a reason why, and you should reconsider having a pet in the first place. I was unable to adopt a dog and I was really disappointed that things didn't work out like I wanted, but my dog didn't like the adoptable dogs and acted out, so the staff made a wise decision based on what they observed. I don't hold it against them because it's their job to take into consideration what is best for all involved. Also, it is a no-kill shelter, so they are not putting animals in danger of euthanasia by doing this, and certainly not going for high turnover just to make money.

Everyone was so nice and very caring for the animals...and to my son and I.  My son adopted Pourcha!  She is such a sweet heart!!  She has blended into our family so  fast and hard!!😃 We love her very much!!  Thanks for everything!!

We did a foster to adopt for this sweet boy about a year ago from this shelter. We did a foster to adopt due to him needing dental work done, the shelter said they would pay for the service as long as he was a foster. We had made an appointment for his teeth with them, and it was cancelled due to the vet not being in. That was not a big deal, so we rescheduled. I was about 10 mins away from the shelter (I lived an hour away at the time) and I received a call saying they had to cancel again. Then I took him back home, and we noticed he had worms. This was never mentioned by anyone at the shelter, and we were left to once again call the shelter and get medication for him. He also had an ear infection. We were also not told about his extreme toy aggression, which caused him to lash out on us the first day we had him. At this point we didn’t feel it was right to give him back to the shelter. So we adopted him and gave him the proper care he needed. He is a senior dog so we were trying to be understanding of his possible health issues, but I feel he was experiencing neglect, and so were we. He is such a sweet boy, and i’m glad we were able to give him the home he deserves.

I adopted a 6 yr old boy and a 3 yr old girl back in November 2019. Both had been there in cages for over 4 months. They're a great compatible match and I just love them both to the moon and back. I have no doubt that my girl was a ferrel cat. She shows all the signs, but she's learning very well from her buddy, I give her plenty of space when she wants it and she's coming along just great. I rated 4 stars only because of staff. Too much to write but all employees and volunteers were definitely not on the same page. Having said that, the woman who took the cats to the cat adoption event at Nemoke Trails was absolutely wonderful! Aside from that, I got 2 wonderful new buddies, and you can see that life is good!

Fostered to adopt Sabine and I'm absolutely in love with her! Great friendly and helpful staff.
