Came out same day to diagnose AC, worked diligently with my awful home warranty company. And had it fixed on a Friday the day they received the parts to repair. Very grateful to have such a great company in the valley.

Naturally my AC stopped working on one of the hottest days of the year. I called Valley Refrigeration, who had installed the unit years ago, and has handled all of my AC repair work since. The last time that I needed a unit repaired was in 2012. I had always been quite happy with their service, and their reasonable rates. But something has changed. Their service is still top grade. They came out 2 to 3 hours after being called, and repaired the unit within 30 minutes. Here is what has changed: The repair man came in and made the repairs before telling me what was wrong, before giving me a price or asking if I want them to fix it. After the repairs were made, (it took him about 30 minutes), he came in and told me that he had replaced the capacitor and checked the refrigerant charge. The cost for this 30 minute repair was $298.97. I didn’t think much about that as I assumed that a capacitor was an expensive part. After I paid him and he left, I looked up the cost of capacitors for my unit on the internet. The cost varied between $6 and $30. I called him and asked if I could get a breakdown of the repair cost, he told me I would have to speak to his boss. I called the boss and told him what had been done and could I get a cost breakdown. He said he would have to see the invoice before he could give me that information. He called me the next morning with my “flat rate” breakdown as follows: Parts – $54 plus tax, Ladder Fee - $38, Service Call - $55, Labor - $150. Needless to say, I was stunned. I have never been charged a ladder fee, to me that equates to a carpenter charging you a hammer fee. The only time that I have ever been charged for a service call is if I did not have the repair work done, If I did have the work done the service call fee was applied to the repair charge. And I have never met a residential repair person that charges $300 dollars per hour ($150 for half hour). So, my advice is if you have a lot of money to give away, call Valley Refrigeration. They do good work but are obscenely expensive and in my opinion pad their billings. If you don’t have lots of money to give away, call around and find someone who will do the work for a reasonable amount. To be fair, after I voiced my opinions about their fees, they did refund the ladder fee.
