Total Heating and Air Conditioning replaced my 27-year-old Lennox furnace and A/C with a Trane 96% efficient furnace and Bosch heat pump / air conditioner. Bottom line - Total Heating and Air Conditioning (Tony) listened to my requirements and concerns, analyzed the environment, provided good, reliable products that were competitive on price, installed them to my satisfaction, and was responsive throughout the entire process. I highly recommend Total Heating and Air Conditioning for furnace and air conditioning replacement. Background: I called 5 highly rated HVAC companies. I got quotes from 4 of them for a total of 7 different system configurations. All components quoted from the four companies I considered industry top-tier, so no configuration was dismissed on performance or quality. I researched all components and read each of their product specifications, installation manuals and warranties. Any questions or discrepancy that I found, I contacted the HVAC company and got clarification. I compared answers against industry standards that are available on the web. The product research exercise refined my thinking of what I wanted out of a system. For me, I wanted a 2-stage, 96% or more efficient furnace with variable speed ECM motor. I did not want abrupt starting and stopping heat. I also wanted the furnace intake and exhaust vents to be positioned unobtrusively. The A/C unit had to be 16 or better SEER rating, have a relatively small footprint and had to be exceptionally quite because it will reside 20 feet from the patio. Good components will not remain that way if they are not installed properly. I consider installation the single most important aspect of the system. A good portion of my time in this process was spent understanding and verifying the installation details. Specifics: Along with the Trane furnace, Total Heating and Air Conditioning offered two A/C options: 1) Trane 17 SEER, or 2) a more expensive Bosch 16 SEER heat pump. I had some reservations about the viability of using a heat pump in the greater Chicago area, so Tony got me in touch with a Bosch trainer to confirm my research and answer my questions. For me, this was a huge aid in choosing Total Heating and Air Conditioning and the Bosch heat pump option. Just an FYI – the high availability and low price of natural gas makes running a heat pump a non-starter. Currently, for a 10 HSPF heat pump it will cost approximately 2.3 times more to run than a 96% efficient gas furnace. I plan to use the Bosch just for air conditioning and if gas prices go up, I have the option to turn on the heat pump. Total Heating and Air Conditioning does NOT have NATE certified nor Bosch Accredited Bosch Contractor (ABC) installers. Illinois does not require a state HVAC license, so trade certifications are important to me. Also being ABC certified would have given me an extra year Bosch warranty (10 -> 11 years). I weighed the 15 years in business, A+ BBB ratings, 100% 5-star reviews and the installation/verification description as enough to tip the scale in their favor. On 19-Oct I gave the OK to schedule the install. There were problems getting the specific Trane model and the install was delayed for several weeks. Tony provided periodic status and on 3-Dec I finally got the news the furnace is in and scheduled the install for the 12th. Tony and team arrived before 7:00 am, weather was cold (mid 30s) and raining most of the day. They put a tent over the A/C unit location to protect themselves and their work. I was kept in loop during the install and was even provided a previous unknown option to me to run my humidifier control through my Ecobee3 thermostat. They finished up for the day by 4:00 pm. The heat pump was not tested, and static pressures not verified so Tony came back a few days later to complete the tests. Kudos to Tony. He handled my MANY questions and concerns over the course of two months with professionalism, leaving me with no buyer’s remorse. The system is relatively quiet, provides consistent temperature, and takes less space.

I am really happy with the recent replacement of our air conditioners and furnaces. The old ones were noisy and didn't work very well. Tony took the time to listen to our concerns and made his recommendation based on what was important to us. He explained the various options, including something that was at a lower price point. We ultimately went with the original recommendation. Tony and his team installed everything on the scheduled date and hauled away the old equipment. The house was left in the same condition it was found. The new systems work perfectly. They are quiet and the house is a uniform temperature. When I had follow-up questions, my call or text was returned the same day. I would use them again in the future.

After working in an HVAC warehouse for 6 years as a kid, I learned based on the stories I heard that it's not always easy to find a trustworthy HVAC company. I called Tony around 7am and told him what symptoms my furnace blower wheel was exhibiting and he showed up 4 hours later. There was a high likelihood my furnace needed OEM parts, so he ran out to pick up the parts he thought he MIGHT need before arriving at 11am so that he could get my furnace up and running in 1 visit. Once he installed the new parts, he spun the blower wheel to make sure everything was moving smoothly, then he paused, contemplated, and said, "In good conscience, I can't install this. Do you see this dent on the wheel? It can cause the wheel to rotate out of balance and over time shorten the life of the motor." Tony ended up going to 2 more supply houses, one as far as Elgin to get another blower wheel and still showed up to complete the job on the same day. Great service and great to know he treated my furnace/repair as if it was his own. That's why Tony is now my "HVAC guy".
