An odd story of entitlement that spans five years, but I’ll be brief. Signed up for an energy audit in 2015. These are performed by independent companies but are funded by your tax dollars collected on your electric bill. This fact is important. R. McLagan, Inc. performed the audit of my house and received the going-rate compensation for the service. Ron McLagan was very thorough, respectful of my space and seemed knowledgeable. He impressed me as someone I could work with. When the report came a few days later, it recommended $25,000 in work. Some of it made a lot of sense but other things seemed questionable, such as injecting cellulose between an upper floor and a 1970s dropped ceiling (which I would probably be removing anyway). Anyway, I didn’t want to spend $25,000 for the complete home overhaul, but I had questions on other parts of the estimate that I might want to do. I wrote an email to him and he never responded. No worries. As any home owner would do, I worked on my house and did things as time and money allowed. I did a bathroom renovation, replaced the furnace with a hybrid gas and electric heat pump unit, etc. Fast forward to 2021. After the furnace upgrade, I no longer needed the old cinder block chimney that rose through the gable peak of the small two-story house. The 2015 report had recommended an attic vent on that side of the house, and I thought R. McLagan, Inc. might be interested in this job which would entail removing the chimney, repairing the roof and installing a gable vent. I knew this wouldn’t come cheap, but I thought R. McLagan, Inc. would do a careful job. I wrote an email. Well, the response I got blew my mind. I received a nasty note accusing me of stealing his ideas and employing others without consulting him! “We are not a handyman service,” McLagan wrote in part.
Response from the owner
David, The email response my father sent is easily interpreted as rude. This is a 75 year old contractor that lacks modern email etiquette. While NYSERDS pays us $250 per audit, this does not cover the full cost of the audit. For example, the going market rate for just a blower door test is as much as $500. And this is included as only one part of the audit. The hopes are that we'll be able to sell a job backed by evidence of effectivity from the audit. So, we're certainly disappointed we didn't earn your business on the things we specialize in, particularly heat pumps, but this is business. My father's statement that we're not handymen is said in earnest; we simply couldn't offer you a fair price for this ancillary work that others could do for less. I apologize for my father's response. This review will hurt me as I continue running this business in the future. I hope you'll reconsider it.

Ron and his crew did an excellent job with extensive air sealing and HVAC work at our house. Very knowledgeable and made sure to do the right work for our situation. They were prompt, and took the time to get things done right (they even found and fixed some problems that would have been part of the original construction). Would highly recommend.
