..On 2/2/2022 a service Tech who identified himself as Jacob trouble shot our heat/cool heat pump system due to the air handler not shutting off after heat setting reached and the heat pump shutting off. When looking at our thermostat he said his company had found many of the same type & model to be defective. Jacob found the system was low on freon and said he put a pound of freon into the system. Jacob said he had a new thermostat and asked me if I wanted to have him change it out. When asked the cost he did not tell me how much the labor would be, but said he thought the thermostat would cost around $89.00. I said we would hold off changing the thermostat to see if adding freon to the system would take care of the problem. Jacob said that it would be okay in that they guaranteed there work for 30 days. We paid Jacob $126.25 for his service call, $40.00 of that for a pound of freon. Jacob did not wait to see if the system would cycle properly and left our residence. After Jacob left we still had the same problem, in that the air handler still did not shut off when cycling through. I called MGS back and was told Jacob was unavailable and another Tech would be responding. A person who said he was the shop foreman and I believe he said his name was Jeromy came to our home. Jeromy got into the air handler and checked voltage readings. Jeromy said it was the thermostat that was bad and said it would cost $225.00 to replace it. I saw the model number of the thermostat Jeromy was going to install. I looked on the Home Depots’ web site and found one for $98.00. I told Jeromy I thought $225 was a little high, in that we had already paid his company $126 and did not want him to change our thermostat. Jeromy appeared to become agitated and stormed off leaving our residence. I purchased a new thermostat from Home Depot and had it installed in a little over 2 hours. Jacob was very personable, but I believe he should have stayed to see if the problem was rectified. For what it is worth, Jeromy is not welcome to ever come to my home again. Gus Lind
Response from the owner
Jacob arrived at 10:37 to find your heat pump only producing 10 degrees of temperature rise. He installed the freon since the unit was low on charge. The temperature rise went up to 26 degrees. Your room temperature was 64 degrees and Jacab waited until the it reached the set point of 71 degrees and shut down. He then stated that we have had nothing but trouble with the thermostat brand you had. You did not want a new thermostat and he collected and left at 11:34. Our Diagnostic which you were charged for is good until we can resolve the issue. You were charged for the diagnostic and freon. When you called back Jeremy was dispatched to your house. He found the thermostat not putting out the proper outputs and quoted you $225.00 for the thermostat and labor to install. There was no charge for the call back. At this point you stated to Jeremy you were going to call the BBB and cancel your credit card payment. I am sorry the thermostat was the issue, but we have to charge for parts. You requested a picture of the thermostat box Jeremy showed you and he presented it to you for the photo. I am sorry you did not like our price but as you stated above it took you two hours to fix. Our company has to charge for the labor and overhead to maintain our services to our customers. It is your choice to accept our quote or not. Jeremy invested an hour on the second call. You were charged $85.00 plus tax so less than $45.00 per the two hours my techs spent there. This is the cost business and understand it. I apologize for Jeremy's agitation. With the storm coming we were trying to get to all of our customers no heats. I am glad you fixed your system and hope you have a great day.

My call was to have my thermostat repaired or replaced. The technician, Quinn, was very polite and professional. He explained their protocol of diagnosis first. The unit needed to be replaced. (It was fairly old) After installation, he explained how the new thermostat worked. Very, very professional and knowledgeable. Thank you
